THE MATHEWS FAMILY LINEAGE |
Sampson MATHEWS (1784 – 1846) Sampson was born on the 16th of June 1784; the event being recorded at his baptism in St Anne's Anglican Church Soho on the 28th of the same month. He was raised with his older brother George (1780 – 1850) in Princess Street Soho. Both Sampson and George grew up under the influence of their father’s carpentry workshop with both picking up the craft handed down from their grandfather. At the age of 22, Sampson married 23-year-old Mary Ann GRACE (1783 – 1846), daughter of Thomas, a fellow wood craftsman. |

The couple initially lived above Sampson’s workshop at No 59 Crawford Street, Marylebone until their own residence in Bryanston Square (just around the corner) was renovated. It was here that they raised seven children: Henry (1807 – 1876), William (1811 – 1890), Richard (1814 – 1863), Mary (1815 – 1815), Mary (1816 – ?), Ann (1817 – ?), Edward (1819 – 1862) and John (1823 – 1841). All children were baptised at the neighbouring Saint Mary’s Church, Marylebone. Sampson and George plied their trade in woodcraft until their deaths, George being registered in the 1845 Post Office Directory of London as a carpenter in Cleveland Street Fitzroy Square, Fitzrovia (an adjacent parish to Marylebone). In the United Kingdom census of 1841, cabinet maker Sampson, wife Mary, and son Edward (an upholsterer) are resident at Upper Bryanston Street, Marylebone. Deaths are registered for Sampson and Mary in Marylebone in 1846. |
